We depend upon a mutual respect for borders, whether they separate one discipline from another, mark the lines between modern states, define laws separating public from private, or shape behaviors that protect my body from your body. Yet the very nature of borders prompts rebellion on all fronts—from those who have been disenfranchised by the dominant culture to those who thrive by creative, intellectual or intuitive means. Everywhere there are cracks and challenges to accepted parameters—or perimeters. This is especially true in creative art practices today. What are the ways in which art making is affected by shifts in culture, politics and everyday life? How do art practices influence, redefine or become each other in the face of real world events and practices? Let’s find out together!
August, 2011 I began this blog during my time in Hunter College’s Integrated Media Arts MFA program. I graduated in March, 2010 and stopped posting on a regular basis. Now it’s time to begin again! I look forward to sharing my discoveries and ideas with you. Please post your comments and share this blog with others.
i found your name on Adrienne Moumin’s FB entry and was interested to find out that you are drawn to art that is unusual and based on surprising content. I especially like your description of art galleries today and the way dealers run them.
My paintings are inspired by torn, weathered multi-layered remains of posters found on wooden walls surrounding construction sites. You’ll find them on my newly created in progress website: http://www.cecilebrunswicknyc.com Thanks for looking.
